Crocheted Hat with Brim

This is an easy hat to crochet. This hat is sized for a child, but can be made larger for an adult by adding a few rounds to the 'rnd 8 to 15' section.

Yarn: Lion Brand Homespun #375 Candy Apple and #370 Coral Gables or color(s) of your choice. One skein is enough to make this hat, pulling yarn from the inside and outside of the skein at the same time.

Gauge: 7 stitches and 10 rows = 4 inches/ 10 cm in single crochet using size N/9mm hook.

Abbreviations:
sc = single crochet
st = stitch
sts = stitches
rnd = round
slst = slip stitch
*...* = repeat instructions between asterisks as directed

Instructions:
Work in rounds in a spiral, using a stitch marker to keep track of beginning of rounds.
With doubled strand of yarn, chain 2.
Rnd 1: Sc 8 sts in the first loop; 8 sts.
Rnd 2: Make 2 sc in each st; 16 sts.
Rnd 3: *Make 1 sc in first st, 2 sc in next st* repeat to end of rnd; 24 sts.
Rnd 4: *Make 1 sc in each of first 2 sts, 2 sc in next st* repeat to end of rnd; 32 sts.
Rnd 5 and 6: Make 1 sc in each st.
Rnd 7: *Make 1 sc in each of first 3 sts, 2 sc in next st* repeat to end of rnd; 40 sts.
Rnd 8 thru 15: Make 1 sc in each st.
Rnd 16: *Make 1 sc in first st, 2 sc in next st* repeat to end of rnd; 60 sts.
Rnd 17: *Make 1 sc in each of first 4 sts, 2 sc in next st* repeat to end of rnd; 72 sts.
Rnd 18: Make 1 sc in each st. Slst to beginning of rnd. Cut yarn and weave in ends.

Note: I used 1 strand of Candy Apple and 1 strand of Coral Gables to crochet this hat, changing to 2 strands of Candy Apple for the last round.

Thanks for the crocheted hat pattern in Homespun. Making a poncho out of Coral Gables for my granddaughter and this will make it a very cute set for her to wear this fall.

Thanks! I used a size N hook, which is also known as 9 millimeter for folks outside the U.S.

Thanks for sharing this pattern. I think I'll use it for my niece who LOVES hats. And maybe one for my daughter.

WOULD THIS FIT GIRLS AGES 6 & 12? THANKS

The hat that I crocheted would fit a 12-year-old well, and be roomy for a 6-year-old.

Everyone has a slightly different tension when they knit or crochet, but I've noticed more difference between individuals crocheting. This is why it is recommended that you make test swatches. But nobody likes to make a swatch, and so I would recommend that you try crocheting a hat in the smaller size and see how it turns out.

If you tend to crochet tightly, then the hat would be smaller and would probably fit a 6-year-old well, and if you tend to crochet loosely the hat would be larger and would fit a 12-year-old (or maybe an adult). You can use a size larger or smaller crochet hook to adjust the size of the next hat accordingly for the other child.

I love this hat for my 2 yr twins and I am thrilled to get this pattern. I will adjust the hook and the rows so it will be smaller. I think it is the most precious for my girl and boy.........it will look great for a boy in boy colors....they love to play with hats.

I want to make this for a 2 year old. Does this start with making a circle/round? Or, is the first stitch the "round"? Does that make any sense?

Thanks for any help you can give me.

Thanks for the pattern - our group at church are making hats/scarves/mittens/blankets for an orphanage in Uganda and India through Contagious Hope. This is an easy pattern - I'll be able to produce a lot for them.
